Why the hell would Hamas attack Israel knowing they were going to lose DISASTROUSLY? Why would Iran encourage that? My guess is is that Iran miscalculated the intensity of the Israeli response. And Hamas obviously did too.
 And I also think Hamas didn't expect their own attack to go as well as it did.
   Which would have led them to underestimate the Israeli response. Had they known they were going to successfully kill 1500 Israelis , they'd have known damn well that Israel would viciously retaliate

I read that the Hamas leadership was shocked that they weren't quickly confronted by the IDF and they were kind of freaking out when they found out how bad it was, knowing what the Jews would do.

Every concerned party is busily painting themselves into a corner.

They, or some other name, will start over just as soon as the dust settles. And now there will be some 1 million youngers in Gaza who will support them.
