I actually made a tidy profit on my wedding. I probably did the whole shebang for like $2500. I invited everyone I know two days before the ceremony which was literally on top of the highest mountain in Michigan at the northernmost point - bush plane country. That really kept out the riff-raff and cut-down on my overhead. It was Lutheran ceremony, so while not recognized in the eyes of God, possibly not even legal, It got the job done. Plus I broke my leg and didn't have to pay for a honeymoon. That saved at least a grand. The cast only cost me $600.
The beginning of a life together is exactly the wrong time to be dropping like 30 g's on a party for a bunch of people 90% of whom you don't care about. Personally, I just throw wedding invitations in the garbage. They should just send you an invoice so you don't have to put on a tie and drive somewhere for a shitty catered meal and cloud of body-fluid-steam rising from the teeming crowd.
