This is weird. The UP is beautiful. It's much different than down here. It might be part of a different land mass or something. They toss around the term "Canadian Shield". I don't think we're part of that down here. It's rocky, kind of mountainous but mountains so old that they are nubs. Not that big and totally covered in trees. There's a lot of water, a lot of bears and the people are a bunch of weirdos but there aren't that many of them and they never ever come down here. Winter up there is fkn nuts. It's that 'lake effect' bullshit.
With us, it's not like North and South Carolina...Dakota...Virginia...whatever. There's a vibe. We don't consider one another to be part of the same whole. It's weird. But we are definitely the REAL Michiganders...no question. They have their own customs and we have no reason to try and take anything from them. I have really only been up there maybe half dozen times. I've been to Florida and Arizona way more times.
They have their own food...they have like a different version of white, kind of heavy Scandinavian. You definitely get the feeling they'd rather not have you around if you aren't from there. But it's like that here too so I don't blame them.
You get sick of seeing people coming in and building shit in what was stunningly beautiful countryside. I'm sure it's exactly the same thing they're dealing with. Anyplace nice attracts the same shit...big houses, bratty kids, too many cars, golf courses, strip malls....and then it's like everywhere else - a crowded shithole. A guy up there told me it was rich people from Chicago that were pissing on their parade.
