There needs to be multiple redundant systems for heat, light and water, especially during the winter.

Water is very reliable around here, few hours out at most. I don't bother worrying about electricity, I can get by without it.
Heat though, I keep kerosene heaters and the river house also has a wood fireplace plus nat gas cook stove and non-electric space heater that will keep it warm.
