"Mao’s Red Guards perpetrated a mass killing of pet dogs. Dogs were seen as symbols of decadence of the bourgeoisie, & in so being, represented the sins of their owners. The Red Guards slaughtered so many dogs that several breeds almost went extinct (with other contributing factors such as the earlier imperial collapse & subsequent ending of palace breeding programs already reducing the numbers of Shih Tzus). Several Asian dog breeds only exist today because of breeding that took place outside of China. Those breeds of dogs are some of the oldest—thousands of years!— & they were nearly wiped out for good in less than two years of absolute chaos.
The Borzoi dog was similarly targeted by Communists in Russia for mass slaughter during the Revolution, & nearly eradicated.
Communists love to punish dogs for the “sins” of their owners because they represent the order the Communists are attempting to destroy."
