I handled no change at my business. The way it works is you get assigned a sales tax number, meaning the business owner is kind of deputized as a tax collector for the state. So $1 becomes $1.04 .   Michigan sales tax was 4% back then. I just wrote "all prices tax included" and stopped handling change. I could never keep enough. It's heavy, dirty and never really counted as part of the sales because I never really took any out of the till. Besides, it wasn't like I was reporting accurate numbers. There was a creative process to the  bookkeeping and I fancied myself to be kind of an artist. Fck change. It's a burden on society and a waste of precious metal. They should just issue those commemorative sets that coin collectors like.
