I read that Hamas leadership was shocked by the magnitude of the carnage. They had expected to be stopped fairly quickly by the IDF and pull back with a few hostages. Now they're freaking out because they know they're about to be wiped out.
One thing is for sure: Israel will never leave its borders unmonitored again.
