I don't like holidays period. It's not the sentiment. It's the disruption in routine. The more I think about it, I'm probably "on the spectrum", even  though I don't know what that means. Daylight savings too. It's just a completely unnecessary psycho-physiological trauma inflicted on the entire nation. Trump's got to make it stop.

"As Memorial Day weekend kicks off, Americans are reminded of the true cost of freedom.

In a living tribute to those who gave their lives in service to our country, the USAA Poppy Wall of Honor has returned to the National Mall in Washington, D.C., for its sixth year, providing a space for remembrance and reflection.

Originally unveiled in 2018, the 134-foot installation pays homage to the more than 600,000 U.S. military members who made the ultimate sacrifice. "

So are we to assume that 600,000 is the total number of soldiers killed since the start of the country?  That's crazy.

Now I know why those guys were standing in the middle of the intersection in town...it was the poppy thing. I hate that. I never have any cash on me when I'm working. That just shame you at that stop sign. It's a horrible 40 seconds.

I've been trying to grow poppies for years but I always lose interest so I've given up. I think you have to keep the seeds in the refrigerator for a month before you plant them or something. Anyhow, there's a story about them. Something about Flanders, which I believe is in Belgium. Oddly, I was looking at that "find-a-grave" or something like that and saw that like five of my great uncles from the same family on the Irish side died in the same week in Flanders in 1917. Jesus Christ. What a miserable ass life they must have led to get roped into something like that.  The worst part is that even if they would have lived they probably would have died withing months anyhow from like "consumption" or the flu or plague. People back then were just crawling with pestilence because they had zero understanding of pathogens. Anyhow, the poppies apparently benefited from the constant, pointless shelling during four years of uninterrupted fruitless stalemate and open-ditch latrines/slash/mass-graves. An inspiring thought to be sure. I think I was more interested in the medicinal angle anyhow.

If I had lived in Europe I suppose I would have emigrated asap too. Too many small countries crammed into the same land mass. There's no way not to go to war. I would have hopped on the first available banana boat and got the fck out of Dodge. I think my grandfather split because they wanted to force him into the army and send him to Ethiopia or something. The irony that he fled to Detroit is priceless. It's like these guys at work. They're all right off the boat but they have a skills that are marketable in any developed country no matter what language is happening.

It’s utterly impossible for native Americans like me to imagine emigration because we’re already here. Where else you going to go?
I’ve been to Europe and Wasn’t impressed by anything that wasn’t at least 1000 years old. Since then, they really haven’t done much vacuuming and dusting.

The dumbest world conflict in the history of people is the Catholics vs Protestants in Ireland. How drunk do you have to be to hop on that? Henry the 8th started that and they have been so black-out blitzkrieged since, they can't even remember why they are fighting. And I can't even guess how they tell one another apart.

The whole thing was that Henry the 8th was sick of beheading his wives because the Catholic Church forbade divorce so he converted to Protestant. That's according to my best recollection but it's probably loosely accurate.

The dilemma that has beset me is that there is no way for me to guarantee that the feral cat I have been feeding twice a day will get his unless I allow that raccoon to eat too. In fact, I think the raccoon watches the cat because she knows I'm feeding him. That is a parable for illegal immigration. The feral cat is a peaceful, well-kept immigrant that has come to join our nation after the fashion of Gus and the raccoon sees the generosity as an opportunity to take and exploit that spirit of kindness.

By all accounts, Henry the Eighth was a big fat lecher that was shooting blanks and blaming his wives. He was a pig.  I took a class on medieval history that I can't remember and pretty much the bullet point is that as some kind of misguided social experiment, the Europeans gave up bathing for 1200 years to see what would happen  and Bubonic Plague was the outcome. The Plague was a big hitter for human evolution.
