This is what I was looking for.  Poe wasn't as screwed up as everyone thinks. He was  successful. His character was assassinated after he died by a jealous rival:

This announcement will startle many, but few will be grieved by it."[84] "Ludwig" was soon identified as Griswold, an editor, critic, and anthologist who had borne a grudge against Poe since 1842.
