We have trade schools here but for decades everyone pushed collage on kids. 

From my experience rebuilding the house, they also need to teach some business along with the trade. I have some skilled trades folks who do good work but not a one of them seems to know how to be a boss and run a business.

Fortunately, I took metal shop, wood shop and drafting in high school. They should have also taught us how to farm and build things too. I suppose some high schools do. Classes in home ownership, bill paying, doing taxes.  Maybe they did teach us that. I can't remember.

I grew up in the suburbs and there was this expectation that everyone would just go on to college. Whatever I did in college was a complete waste of time and money. I learned nothing that was worth knowing. The exception is getting a two-year degree in technical drawing after the fact while I was working. That training had a useful application.

We had arc welding in middle school. Most kids don't even know how to use a tape measure now.

I took drafting and art. I should have taken metal shop.

That is the problem. There are plenty of college grads working menial jobs.

What was really fortunate for me was that my dad owned a shop so I picked up technical and business skills just by virtue of being brought up in that environment and working in those positions. I preferred being in the shop as opposed to the office because no one could talk to me in the back of the house. The best thing I picked up in college was the work experience I gained working for the university food service. That actually came in handy. Oddly, no one's ever asked me about Plato or Medieval history in the workplace...yet.
