That is why 3/4 of mine got gutted to the studs. When the back roof, wall, and windows went, the storm came in. They went a little far imo but mold is nothing to play with and you only get one shot with the insurance.

And considering some of the scary wiring we found behind the dry wall, it was a good thing. It is a wonder it had not burned down.
That's how my house is. I think electricity was a retro-fit. I just pretend it's not happening.

Insurance is insanely expensive, they are always somehow justifying that, yet insurance companies are among the richest entities in human history.  I have a high deductible. I figure there's not a whole lot that can go wrong with a house like this that I can't fix myself.  I don't know how it breaks down but for 3 car and this little house, it's like $1200 every other month...7200 a year. That's crazy. On top of everything else we pay. It's no wonder no one can afford to save anymore.

You never think it will be your house on the TV news...  I sure stuck them this time, by the time it is all said and done, near double, maybe more, than what I paid for the house in the first place. But I am still out of pocket for some of it.

I worry more about my barn because it's irreplaceable. If it burned down or collapsed in a storm, they'd pay for a metal pole barn to replace it. But it's the genuine article, a real 1800's variety red barn made of trees cut down on the lot. It's a community asset. I don't want a metal barn.

Built in '75, things moved and things added over the years. None of it by an electrician apparently. sloppy work, bad work, dangerous work.  It's correct now.

My house has to be at least 100. It's just one hack job piled on top another. I've rebuilding the inside of this house slowly for 25 years. Everything's great except the service panel in the basement looks like something you'd see in India. I'm embarrassed to even call an electrician.

Barns aint cheap no more. Neighbor's have a old little one that has become a neglected catch all for 3 families' equipment and some want it torn down I rant at them not to do it, it really just needs new siding and paint.

If you do go metal, remember condensation and build for it. i have actually had it rain inside my carport here in the holler. That sucks.

The old farm house I rented for years, 1903, was like that. Electricity was added at some point and thank goodness they were afraid of it. All the original was put in metal conduit. By the time I got there the insulation on the wires would turn to dust if you touched them.

Actually this house is well built. They didn't have the technology or materials to build cheap houses 100 years ago - vastly different from the million-dollar McMansions that I work on - pressed paper, hollow doors, plated hardware...
This is wet plaster, old growth studs that are actual 2" by 4".  It's solid.

The farm house was like that. Had it been taken care of it might have lasted another hundred years. I suspect that at the time it was built, it was one of the nicest in that area.

To them it's a novelty. They enjoy it.

This is the worst part of the year but it doesn't last. Two months it'll be spring, birds and vegetation will start coming back. In 3 months it will be an entirely different kind of planet.
