We would go through there when I was a kid and we'd drive to Florida. I liked driving through the Smokies better. That was actually the first time I saw mountains. I was really struck by how the road was cut through the side of a mountain and there was like a rock face on one side. I had never seen exposed rock like that before or red dirt. Michigan is flat.

So one of the demands being placed on me is that when the chimney swifts leave for the season...probably already have...I'm suppose to put a cap on the chimney and finish the work on the stone fireplace I started and almost finished back in like 2013. I'm sure I had a vision back then, I'm just at a loss to recall. I got rid of the baby-killer hearth and covered the brick face with "cultured" stone. It really took a measure of temerity bordering on fraud to use the word "cultured" in reference to that material. Nevertheless, I think if I can build an appropriately distracting mantle, the culture of the "stone" will recede. It does get crazy up by the Grand Canyon. I was driving around up there in a snowstorm. Utah's nice....whatever that is up that way...Glan Canyon maybe? I drove through there a couple times. I like driving a lot better than flying even though I don't normally like driving. But when you're on a road trip it's different. You aren't late for work hitting every redlight. I did a lot of driving back and forth across the country when I was a kid. Seems like I had more money and free time than responsibilities back then. America's a giant country.

My next door neighbors are both ex-military in their 70's. They have a stockpile of weapons, they have a generator (big) and had contractors over there installing some kind of geothermal bullshit that probably won't do **** in Michigan in January. I don't know if they are "preppers" per se. I know I'm going to roll the dice against the weather and get screwed. There's a couple things I need to do before winter. One is install a new pedestrian door on the barn. It's not architecturally consistent with the original construction, but I opted to avail myself of certain technological breakthroughs that have happened upon humankind since like 1800...hinges for example. I did the rough. I just have to slide this heavy-ass pre-hung door I bought into the opening and pop a few nails into it. But it's so warm and stoned in this chair where I'm sitting I cant bring myself to go out into the wind right now or probably any time soon.
I also wanted to tile my front porch in natural stone and build a railing painted in some whimsical pastel color so when people drive by they'll be impressed by how groovy we are. But realistically, that may have to wait until spring.

I even scoped out these three giant trees and thought of how I would engineer a bridge and a platform and mount my tiny house in the trees. Or I could just more or less build a deck with 6 or 8 posts anchored in concrete below the frost line and then build the house on the deck. And use RV appliances. It's an elaborate fantasy. I've been working on it for years...like the greenhouse I'll never build.

The TA fishing dude over in the UK has what he calls a tackle shack and he heats it with a tiny wood stove. Trying to think, it might be Swedish. Cute little stainless steel thing about the size of a small microwave. You can cook on it too.

I don’t think it’s an organized plan. But it’s real easy to look at it like that. It’s just the word is out that Western societies and their sloppy generosity are easy to exploit, especially if you have a chunk of their population looking to assuage their liberal guilt by adopting you as their pet victim. So they come in droves. The real victims are the poor Mexicans that have been caught in the fray.

There’s been a cat population explosion in our neighborhood. Every house has kittens. It kind of comes and goes. I’m not sure what influences that. There must be something. Some animals, like raccoons, become more fertile and breed more prolifically if there’s abundant food. I also read there’s been a spike in diabetes in raccoons because they eat our trash which is a sad as hell commentary on our sorry asses.
